Continued exploitation of Africa by Europe

Continued exploitation of Africa by Europe

By Adebayo Lamikanra On Aug 21, 2022

I must confess that I did not embrace Facebook when it was first introduced, dismissing it as nothing more than a fad. A short lived fad which was soon to be discarded as the world moved on to newer and better things. I had not reckoned with human narcissism, that ingrained desire to strike a pose before the rest of the world and in doing so create a flattering profile, attracting approval from people all around the world, like minded people who in turn provide their own competing profile for appreciation. My mindset at the time did not allow me to jump onto the Facebook band wagon. However, I was not allowed to indulge myself in this fancy for very long as shortly after the unveiling of Facebook, friend requests began to drop into my inbox with undeniable regularity. These requests came mainly from those I had taught or was teaching at Obafemi Awolowo University, young men and women who wanted to know my views about all manner of topics or wanted me to know what had become of them since they slipped the leash of the university and were now making waves in the big, bad world. Another group of people who filled my inbox with friend requests were those who did not know me from Adam but had been following my writings which at that time were being published with enough regularity in the Guardian to suggest that I was a Guardian columnist. Although I held out for some time and did not accede to those requests, I had to give in and joined the rest of the world in registering on what has become the largest platform in the world on which you could meet just about anybody. Since then, I have met a few people in the flesh who tell me with a smile that they knew me quite well since I was their friend on Facebook. This, I always receive as a compliment since it suggests that of all the thousands of their phantom friends, I had managed to manoeuvre myself into a position of reality, occupied by me in the same way that some space in their mind was reserved for their real friends, those people with whom they shared a common physical space. For all that however, the Facebook experience is for me, still very strongly coloured by its overall lack of reality.

No matter how intimate your Facebook friends appear to be, the relationships contacted on Facebook carry with them a strong whiff if anonymity which is a form of protection from reality unless of course the so called friends choose to solidify their phantom friendship by arranging to confront each other with their respective physical presence. After all, Facebook was birthed by a group of young men who were more comfortable chatting with disembodied human beings than chatting up and actually engaging with people in the flesh. There is therefore an element of recklessness albeit protected by a form of anonymity in the very act of making a broadcast on Facebook.

In the end when I finally overcame my resistance to the very idea of exposing myself on Facebook, I soon found myself with a couple of thousands of friends most of them as remote as they were before we became friends but with the capacity to talk to each other and to any number of people who could not only eavesdrop on our conversations but could actually barge in and take over whatever it is we are talking about. Of course this is the very essence of Facebook because the quality of your post is judged by the number of people who take the trouble to react to your post or better still to actually take the trouble to make comments which generate other comments some of which agree with the original post or disagree in such a way as to show that they are ignorant, sometimes totally ignorant of the subject under discussion and have nothing to offer but their annoying nuisance value. Unfortunately this happens distressingly frequently and is a discouragement to honest participation. For this reason more than anything else I find that I only make periodic visits to the Facebook, to take a cursory glance at what is trending there. This is why I was on Facbook a few days ago to find that one of those denizens of the virtual world said something to the effect that all what is causing the discomfiture which is assailing all countries in Africa can be traced to the contents of a book written by a Guianese professor of history who died at the age of thirty-eight as long ago as 1980. The book which trended furiously in the seventies had the expressive title of ‘How Europe underdeveloped Africa’ was written by Walter Anthony Rodney a radical historian who pitched camp with the masses that had the multiple misfortune of living in Africa and in the African Diaspora. This book was in the tradition of a long line of radical African, Afro-American and Afro-Caribbean scholars who interrogated the Afrcan experience and came away convinced that the root of African suffering remained planted in the soil of Europe and the European Diaspora all over the world.

The Europeans collided with Africa with characteristic violence towards the end of the fifteenth century when Portuguese sailors who had received schooling in the school of navigation which had been sponsored by a Henry, distinguished from any number of Henrys of that period by being introduced to the world as Henry the Navigator even though he never set foot outside Europe. It was in this school that the Portuguese learnt to sail down the West coast of Africa and return safely to Europe. On those early journeys they touched many places before they arrived in the kingdom of the Kongo which extended over a vast area and took in many parts of what we now know as Angola and the Congos. The king on the Bakongo throne who welcomed the Portuguese to his kingdom was called Joao 1 but it was his son Afonso 1 who interacted with the Portuguese for close to half a century. Within that period, the Portuguese interfered so much in the affairs of the kingdom that he became nothing more than a vassal to his European visitors, a situation which lasted till the twentieth century and brought all indigenous development to in that area to  a halt. There is no doubt that the Portuguese brought the underdevelopment of Kongo with them as they very early became involved with the transportation of the Bakongo out of their country as slaves and configured the kingdom as a source of slaves for the nascent Trans-Atlantic slave trade which went on for more than three centuries and led to the deportation of more than 12 million Africans across the Atlantic in the largest forced migration the world has ever seen. Not only were so may Africans transported in appalling conditions the whole of the economy of West and Central Africa was skewed in the direction of the slave trade which was responsible for the disruption of trade over the entire region.

People have always tended to think of the slave trade in terms of the bodies which were spirited out of Africa to provide labour for the growing economy of Europe through the cultivation of lands in the New World. But this is a short sighted reading of the situation because of the twelve million people that were forced into a life of unremunerated labour, a considerable number of them were highly skilled people and intellectuals who had their usefulness to their communities curtailed by their sad fate. It is often forgotten that without the unpaid labour of Africans it would not have been possible their masters to understand the intricacies of tropical agriculture, the source of their wealth. Eminent historians have now come to the conclusion that without the wealth created by those millions of enslaved Africans, the foundation for the capitalist exploitation of the world would not have been possible. This observation, controversial when it was first pointed out by the brilliant Eric Williams who went on to become the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, has since been corroborated by other prominent historians including Walter Rodney.

Although capitalism was built on the backs of enslaved Africans, the descendants of those slaves have been carefully and rigorously excluded from the benefits of this cruel but all conquering economic model. Africa has been systematically prevented from owning tbe means of production which has led to the fabulous wealth which transformed Europe and its Diaspora into veritable paradises on earth whilst the children of Africa have been relegated to the status of the wretched of the earth, suffering from all the biting indices of disease, poverty and human degradation . This is why genuine African scholars and leaders  of the quality of Walter Rodney, Nkrumah, Nyerere, Awolowo and others have come to the conclusion that the only way that our sorry condition can be ameliorated is to seek refuge in Socialism which would in any case means a return to what existed in most parts of Africa before the Europeans arrived to turn our world upside down and inside out.

The Europeans arrived in Africa at the beginning of the sixteenth century at a time when several impressive empires were flourishing with uncommon vigour in many parts of Africa. Apart from the famous empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhai which were either waxing or waning there were empires within  the boundaries of modern Nigeria that were not just making progress but were strong enough to resist European predation for centuries. The Oyo empire was flourishing impressively in the derived savannah region of the Yoruba country whilst the Benin empire held sway in the forest region as Ife civilisation as well as the Benin empire were producing stunning works of art which have not been surpassed anywhere in the world for their beauty and sheer artistic appeal. It cannot be just coincidence that those artistic feats have not been replicated since the unfortunate arrival of the Europeans on our shores and their subsequent inland penetration as soon as they had developed the military capacity to safely brush aside whatever resistance that Africans could mount against them. All these are empirical evidence of European conspiracy to under-develop Africa so that they can continue to have unfettered access to our resources both human and natural as the current migration of our best brains to Europe has so clearly demonstrated. All those who have a contrary opinion should present objective and well researched evidence to support their claim instead of making empty noise on Facebook.

African Strength

In 1943 African American soldiers faced off with w.hite American Military police during World War II on British soil. Yes you read correctly Black American soldiers had to fight their own w.hite American soldiers, while in England, where they were fighting for the world.

Why? Because the English town of Bamber Bridge in Lancashire was not segregated so they treated the Black soldiers like all other races, aka Blacks were free to eat, drink anywhere, BUT back in America segregation of Blacks and w.hites still existed. So essentially the American army went to someone else’s country and demanded they adopted America’s r.acist practices.

The folks in Lancashire were like h.ell no we like the Black soldiers in fact during that time the American created Jitterbug dance was popular and the British women were eager to learn it from the Black soldiers. The fondness for the Black American soldiers was also supported by those famous essays written by George Orwell who stated that the Black American soldiers had the best manners of all the American troops.

So when the American Military police found out that their own Black American soldiers were drinking at the same pubs as w.hite people they went in to arrest them. The people in the town got mad about the treatment of the Black soldiers and decided to then turn their pubs into “BLACKS ONLY DRINKING PUBS” the very opposite of what was taking place in America with their W.HITES ONLY businesses.

Of course this pissed off the American military so guns went blazing, and when word spread back at camp that Black soldiers had been s.hot, scores of men formed a crowd, some carrying rifles and by midnight more American military police arrived with a machine gun-equipped vehicle, so the Black soldiers had no choice but to get rifles from British stores while others barricaded themselves back on base, so now it was American w.hite soldiers versus American Black soldiers. Several soldiers d.ied including 17 Black American soldiers.

Back in A.merica the battle was hushed up because they didn’t want the country to find out that they were fighting their own soldiers which would anger the black population and weaken the moral in the country.

Message To Nigerian Youths

*IMPORTANT MASSAGE TO ENTIRE NIGERIA YOUTHS*.

THEME: *DANGER OF BECOMING TOO DOGMATIC ABOUT POLITICS*

*BY  ITUNUMI OBASA,*

Build the Youth! Build the Nation!!!..

Greetings to our vibrant and committed Nigeria Youths out there. I just quickly want to remind us all that Youths are the engine room that propel a nation, and if you see a nation that is well developed, it shows their Youths are neither stagnant, sleep nor slumber simply because they made their voices heard.

A common quote usually says "Politics is a dirty game", I will never join them simply because you don't want your image to be tarnished, your integrity to be questioned, or to be called bad names, and or even concluded in your mind that Politics is only meant for Touts or illiterates hence you seperate or isolate yourself to be relegated to the voiceless, fold arms and keep watching things as the country stylishly dragging into mud. Then you are not a PROUD, neither a GOOD AMBASSADOR nor a GREAT CITIZEN that you are expected to be.

Youths inclusiveness in Politics brings fresh insight and contemporary knowledge of society, technology and cultures which can easily results in  effectiveness and efficiency in the Nigeria Leadership system.

Therefore, your participation in Politics increases your Awareness, competencies, self-esteem, and Ability to enhance your development as it provides you with opportunities to generate agenda for change.

Apart from that, It also improves your status in terms of self-discipline, time-management and mobility for a better change in your community.

Moreso, youths participation in politics gives individuals insight into the multiple roles of adults and broaden your career which enhances your personal sense of connectedness, belonginess and being valued, and respected.

Inspite of all of these, we the Youths must never see ourselves as a failure that after all no amount  of noises, which makes no difference we will still remain stagnant. Really??? It is a CAPITAL NO for me. We youths must take responsibilities.

To this end, your PERMANENT VOTERS CARD (PVC) Is your power. Your PVC is your Franchise, and if you use it wisely you will definitely make a positive change which automatically shows you have diligently performed your civic duty.

I, Itunumi Obasa,  implores all the Nigeria Youths as the General Election is knocking at our doors especially for the Presidential Election to elect into office the 16th President of Federal Republic of Nigeria. As the General Elections are fast approaching, we should all endeavour to read about the past contributions of each Aspirant, read more about their self development, and contributions so far to the Nigeria Economic Development.

Stop listening to rumour mongas or political propagandas, stop listening to all the destructive critiques because some of these people that are all bent in bringing people down have few or no relative in this our Nigeria, thus believing that once they put Nigeria Administration in the hands of unproductive individual who couldn't run his office successfully while he was elected as the Governor, they will all run back to where they came from leaving the problems for you and I to face which means we are in for it for another 4 good years.

It is high time we joined hands together. it's our time to stand on our toes to rebuild this country endowed with abundant Earth Summit. It is High time we said 'NO' to token gift you are collecting from them to enslave and exploit us all for years. If you continue to be a slave in your country, this shows you already lost your respect and dignity in any country u might later run for cover because if those youths of others nations were like you and I, you wouldn't have run down there for greener pasture.

I call on all the Nigeria Youths  pleassssse🙏🙏🙏 let's come together with  one voice to rebuild this Country.

Are you afraid to make your voice heard? It shows you are not growing up to become a role model, it shows you are afraid not to die in rebuilding a greater future for our children and the unborn, it shows Nigeria is not lucky to have you! If you think all these aren't real about you, then lets all forget the gossips, forget the ranting, lets bombard and support the REAL MAN the CAPABLE MAN, the MAN OF HIS WORDS, the real MR TALK AND DO, after your investigation you would hv known the true MESSIAH that God sent.

If we miss it now, we miss it forever!!!..

Time to move away from religion sentiments, time to drop the excessive talk, time to face the reality, time to hit the street, door to door, person to person, twitter to facebook, Istagram to whatzap to tiktoks etc....

Nigerian Youth!!!!

Let's join hands to make Nigeria worth living for everyone.

Nigerian Youths!!!

Let's join hands to make Nigeria a better place for all.

I, Itunmi Obasa, believes Nigeria Shall be Great Again!!!..

Businesses shut, communers groan as Saongo-Ota road collapses

The deplorable condition of the Sango-Ota end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State, has continued to compound the woes of residents and business owners in the area.

Our correspondent, who visited the area on Thursday, observed that the road had collapsed.

Motorists and commuters had a hectic time plying the route.

The almost three-kilometre stretch of Joju, immediately after the Sango-Ota Bridge inward Ifo, was abandoned.

The road was dotted with large potholes lodged with water.

Both trucks and vehicles were forced to connect to the other lane, as they faced oncoming vehicles only to connect back to their lane at the Igbala end of the road.

Motorists expressed fear that the available lane might soon get damaged due to the high volume of traffic in the axis.

It was also a similar sight at the Toll Gate end of the road, where the lane connecting motorists from Alakuko inward Ogun State, had also been abandoned.

Only a few vehicles were seen meandering through the section of the road ridden with potholes.

A gully lodged with water could also be seen at the end of the axis.

Most of the motorists resorted to plying one way, including a police patrol van.

Buhari, Babangida mourn renowned journalist, Duro Onabule

Former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), has expressed sadness over the death of his former Chief Press Secretary, Duro Onabule.

This was contained in a condolence message he signed in Minna, yesterday. He said: “I received with profound sorrow news of the death of my dear friend, adviser and elder brother, Chief Duro Onabule, who passed away yesterday, at the age of 83.

“It is a sad irony that Chief Onabule, who was usually among the first to celebrate my birthday, died on the eve of my anniversary, and his passing will no doubt cast a long shadow over the festivities.

“For eight years, this highly accomplished journalist and man of letters stood by me as we tried to re-engineer this country.

“His intelligence, patriotism and absolute fidelity to the unity of this nation shone through, becoming a big part of the successes we managed to achieve at the time.”

Also, President Muhammadu Buhari commiserated with the family of the late Onabule. He also condoled with the Nigerian Union of Journalists and Nigerian Guild of Editors over the sad loss.

The President noted the contributions of the respected journalist to the development of Nigeria, especially his role in stimulating robust debates with insightful articles while working as Editor of National Concord and Chairman, Board of Directors of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

He prayed that God would receive the soul of the departed and comfort his family.

RUSSIA BLAST: Russia says 'Sabotage' behind arms deport blasts Crimea

Russian Defense Ministry has blame saboteurs for explosion at a military warehouse in northern Crimea that force the evacuation of more than 3,000 people, Russian State Media reported.

The explosion on Tuesday rocked an ammunition storage facility near the village of Mayskoye and disrupted train services and power supplies although nobody was seriously injured in the blast, the ministry says.

Russia's Kommersant Newspaper also reported on Tuesday on another possible act of sabotage in Crimea, qouting witnesses as saying that phumes of smoke could be seen over a Russia military airbase on the peninsula in Gvardeyskoye.

KENYA ELECTION: Defeated Odinga says Kenyan election null and void

Kenyan defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga as rejected as "null and void" the result of the August 9 election and said Kenyan democracy faces a long legal crisis.

Deputy president William Ruto was officially declared the winner on Monday by a slender margin.

Odinga's first comment on the result came shortly after four of the seven election commissioners said that they stood by their decision a day earlier to disown the outcome of the presidential poll, saying the final tallying process has been "opaque".

Insecurity: Worries over increase of number of police attached to VIPs

Nigerians have expressed worries over the growing number of orderlies and escorts attached to private businessmen, political appointees, actresses and even their children for security protection at expense of citizens.

In traffic situations, ‘the big man or woman’, or their children and nannies, could be seen seated in the vehicles behind. Trucks in quasi-military motorcade trail them. Inside are police officers, on secondment to these Very Important Persons (VIPs).  At traffic bottlenecks, these officers, armed with AK-47 rifles slap bonnets of nearby cars, dishing orders to other road users: “Move. Clear. Give way”.

But Nigerians are lamenting these extra protections of VIPs, while other citizens are left to fend for themselves.

Apart from violating the dignity of ordinary men, citizens are lamenting the appropriation of available manpower needed for general country policing by a few, especially with the low ratio of policemen to citizens.

According to the United Nations, there ought to be one police officer for every 450 persons for effective policing. Nigeria, with a population estimated at 206,139,589, will therefore require about 458,087 policemen to adequately police the nation.

Unfortunately, the practice of attaching large numbers of security officers to the affluent, VIPs, and private businessmen continues, despite the current manpower of the Nigerian police, estimated to be about 400,000 men and women, which is still insufficient compared to the numbers recommended by the UN.

Recall that former Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mike Okiro, had recently lamented that about 150,000 out of the 400,000 police personnel are attached to private individuals.

Also, former IGP, Mohammed Adamu, had in a move to curb the menace before his retirement, ordered the withdrawal of policemen attached to VIPs across the nation.

ASUU, Federal Government meeting deadlock, lecturers stage walk out

The meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government ended in a deadlock on Tuesday.

Sources familiar with the matter told one of our correspondents that the Federal Government’s team met with the representatives of ASUU at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission.

“The meet with the FG’s team was headed by Professor Nimi Briggs and it started by 12:00pm and ended by 3:00pm. There was no new offer on the table, they simply begged us to call off the strike”., the top ASUU official told The PUNCH.

Another source said, “ The lecturers left angrily, though we cannot really ascertain what was discussed with them as you can see, we were not invited, but the proposal presented was rejected”, a top ministry official also confirmed.

Also confirming the development, a member of the ASUU National Executive Committee who asked not to be quoted explained to our correspondent that the government was “unserious” with the negotiations.

“They are not serious. I can’t go over the details with you because the president is responsible for disseminating the information. The proposal presented was unreasonable. There is no hope in sight”.

Four students celebrating WASSCE drown at Lagos beach

Tragedy struck on Tuesday at the Elegushi Beach, in the Lekki area of Lagos State, after four teenagers drowned while swimming in the water.

PUNCH Metro gathered that 10 secondary school leavers, aged between 14 and 15, went to swim at the beach to celebrate the completion of their West African Senior School Examination.

They were said to be pupils of the Kuramo Senior College, Lekki.

The spokesperson for the Elegushi Beach Management, Chief Ayuba Elegushi, in a statement on Tuesday, said the pupils were not properly registered.

He noted that the incident happened at an unmanned section of the beach not open to the public.

He said, “We initially sent them away from the area of the beach they wanted to swim in. Then, they went to another place that was not for the public at all. It was the child of our kinsman, Abass, who took them from school to the beach and those kids followed him.

“They did not pay any gate fee to access the beach. Abass used the leverage that he was one of us to take them through another place.”

19.64% inflation rate highest-ever in 17 years, says NBS •Rate jumps by 1.82% in one month •World Bank, ex-LCCI chief worried

The Bureau attributed the 17-year all-time high 1.82% jump – the highest in 17 years – to rising food prices and other Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Also listed as contributors were the increased in costs of gas and liquid/solid fuel; hike in road/air transport fares; garments, cleaning, repair and clothing.

But the World Bank blamed the upward swing on government’s lackadaisical attitude to address the trend. A former Director-General at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Dr. Muda Yusuf described the situation as worrisome.

According to Nairalytics, a web portal that publishes Nigeria’s historical macroeconomic data, the last time inflation soared above 19.64% was September, 2005 when it rose to 24.32%.

The latest inflation data is captured in the July CPI Report released yesterday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The Bureau said: “This is 2.27 per cent points higher when compared with the rate recorded in July 2021, which was 17.38 per cent.

“This showed that the headline inflation rate increased in the month of July 2022 when compared to the same month in the previous year of July 2021.

“This means that in the month of July 2022 the general price level was 2.26 per cent higher than in July 2021, NBS said, adding that on a month-on-month basis, the Headline inflation rate in July 2022 was 1.817 per cent, which is 0.001 per cent higher than the 1.816 per cent recorded in June 2022.”
